With 8 teams of 4 signed up, along with incomplete crews battling it out in the game of their choice, the first event in Season Six went off with a bang. From newcomer Neon’s sweep in Guitar Hero 3 to veteran Poptab’s domination in the form of an 18-0 shutout in Strikers, history was being made all over the place. Let’s get right to the standings though.

As the new season is crew-centered, let’s first look at the scores for the various 4-man teams.

1. The Broodwich: 43 points
2. Clueless: 24 points
3. Highly Trained Newbies (HTN): 21 points
4. The Zookeepers: 15 points
5. TIE: Once Over The Rainbow & Team T-Bone: 11 points
6. Armadillo Safe: 7 points
7. Aggressive Gnomes: 5

As is obvious up above, The Broodwich, consisting of KYAG and Jay for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mr. Moo for Guitar Hero III, and Poptab for Mario Strikers Charged, are in the lead by a whopping 19 points. 19 points is a high score for one matchup, let alone for a lead right out the gate. They aren’t the only crew with highlights, however. Several crews completely wiped out the opposition in certain games, while other games proved to be too much for them. The Zookeepers have yet to give up a single point in Brawl, thanks to our longest attending vets Skiddz and Learve, who remain forces in the scene. Clueless and HTN both swept the Guitar Hero III side of things, taking it 5-0 to each crew they faced. Clueless has Austin to thank for that, and HTN showed much love to Neon for their sweep. Our Guitar Hero rules actually shaped up into what they are now thanks to the knowledge and input of Neon, and so I give much thanks for that.

What will happen in the quarterfinals next month, on October 11th? The points are still being calculated for The Zookeepers and Armadillo Safe, as they have yet to face off in Guitar Hero III. Also, now that Poptab has shown what can be done in Mario Strikers Charged, who, if any, will answer the challenge and take him out before he completes a full season of undefeated sweeps? While The Zookeepers have yet to give up a point in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the same can be said for The Broodwich, and it looks like they will be facing each other in the next month.

Finally, we have a tie on our hands. Both Once Over The Rainbow and Team T-Bone are tied up on the scoreboard. They also have yet to face off, and will most likely be settling this next month as well. October is the Quarter-Finals, and only 4 teams will make it into the Semi-Finals in November, so needless to say this is going to be the most hyped season in Save•Point history.

OCTOBER 11th | Save•Point Season 6: Quarter-Finals

The week leading up to the Season 6 opening event on September 13th, I’d like to post interviews involving the different crews. The problem?

I haven’t interviewed any of you yet.

So if you’d like to get interviewed, here’s a few ways we can get this done. Email me at p.galicia@sjcpl.org letting me know your crew wants to get interviewed, and we can either do it via email, we can chat on AIM, or we can meet up at the Main Branch library sometime before the event. If you have a logo or a group picture, we’ll put that up. If we end up doing the interview live, we’ll take a picture at that point.

Season 6 is going to be huge, and there’s going to be some fierce competition between the various crews, so I’d like to get everyone I can into the spotlight. Otherwise, how is the next big rivalry going to be showcased?

The last Save•Point of the summer before we move back to Saturdays, we’ll be showing off the games of Season 6.  Check out Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Guitar Hero III, and Mario Strikers Charged, while scoping out people for Season 6’s team-based tournament play.  Sadly, the event is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., but that’s plenty of time to try out team members and get a peak at how Season 6 is going to work.

Save•Point Summers continue with our second event.  The doors open at 4:00 p.m. and it all wraps up at 8:00 p.m.  This one consisting mostly of Open Play, with a welcome return to Pokemon. Pokemon: The Horizon is the tournament of the day. To play, you need:

• One Nintendo DS
• One Pokemon Diamond or Pearl game
• A team of up to six Pokemon, with a recommended level of 100

This tournament will determine our new Pokemon Champion and set up the Elite 4, the top four Pokemon Trainers who must be defeated in order to gain a shot at the true champ.

No doubt now, depression has set in amongst you all. Being unfairly ripped away from the homework, the classes, the early morning attendance, and the awesomely long days has probably taken it’s toll on you all. It can be hard being away from an institution that brings you such joy for so long.

Luckily, Save•Point is this Wednesday, from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. to help you cope. Come and hang out, listen to each other’s problems concerning missing school, and maybe while you’re around, enter our Super Smash Bros. Brawl Doubles tournament. Sign Ups end at 4:30 for the tournament, and it’ll be the first of our Summer event tournaments.

Brawl not your game of choice. It happens. That’s why we’ll have Wii Tennis as well. Take on friends and family using the unique Wii controller. Team up and take out opponents in what we call an Open Play station, where there’s no tournament, just games.

We know you miss school, but hopefully we can help you cope.

Save•Point: Good friends, great competition.

As you can see by the updated dates to your left, there’s a good deal of gaming to be had this month.

Start off with comic/manga based gaming at Free Comic Book day, starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday.  The following week is Open Play, following the same times.  A all-ages Family-Friendly tournament is scheduled for that day, in the form of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  Anyone can join, and items galore will be on.

Going into the second half of the month, we enter the Season 5 Finals.  Our Wild Card event gives everyone a final shot at sliding into the exclusive top spots.  May 17th will be our Round Robin event.  The Round Robins will create a seeding system that will place everyone into a new set of pools to be played May 24th.  These pools will continue to be used until we’ve widdled our way down to the new Smash Champ of this Season.

Remember that all registration for an event ends a half hour after doors open, and we’ll sadly no longer make exceptions.  Be sure to be there on time!

So, first off, the bad news.

There’s a bit of confusion about when the next Save•Point is. Usually, there’s a Save•Point event every other week. Our last Save•Point event was the week before last, so it stands to reason we’d have one this week. However, GT events are always on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. The way the weeks fall, this week is only the first week of the month, and so it wasn’t scheduled.

The next Save•Point event, S•P: Spring Break is going to be on Thursday, April 10th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. After that, we’re going to be doing our regular Save•Point Open Play on Saturday, April 12th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We’re going to do an all ages Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament for fun, with a few stations open for regular free play. Finally, at the end of the month, on Saturday, April 26th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Round 2 of Season 5 comes around with our headline game, Brawl. Newcomer Feetme has already broke through the top ranks in the scene by defeating Save•Point vet Jay in the finals of our first tournament. With other old schoolers training up and new people guaranteed to show up again with unseen skills, there’s going to be some great competition.

Tomorrow, Saturday the 22nd, Save Point presents Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Sign ups end at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow.  If you have your own controller, it’s recommended you bring it, with Brawl’s new options and all that.

This will be the last Save Point event with pizza, due to budget restraints, as well.

Tomorrow, which is Tuesday the 4th, the Magazines, Newspapers, and Fiction department (long name, eh?) is hosting a Guitar Hero III tournament down in the Colfax Auditorium. You know, the theater room the Anime Club meets in? You’ll find it, Rona (if we had a teen librarian, it’d be her!) has faith in you.

Since it’s a gaming tournament, they’ve asked me to run the event, and since I happen to know you have a half day on Tuesday, it’s a perfect scenario. Sign Ups end at 1:30, and the tournament starts at 2:00. All ages, of course.  Rona’s been standing over my shoulder as I write this, and she thinks that’s enough info. So I’ll see you there tomorrow? Excellent.

Just a quick update about what the schedule for the next few weeks is:

February 2nd: Science Alive! falls on our usual day for gaming, so we’re moving a week over. Just to get the point across, I just want everyone to know there is nothing planned for Save•Point for Feb 2nd.

February 9th: From 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m., the final Melee Doubles tournament takes place. Everything will be wrapped up, and Save•Point will end at 2 p.m.

February 23rd: An all-ages tournament for Halo 3 happens on this date. Anyone interested in seeing how our newest tournament series will work or wants to see the local competition is welcome to come out. This is the last open-play tournament for Halo 3 before our tournament series starts in March. Don’t miss it!

March 8th: Changes in our tournament lineup have caused a bit of chaos. Recently, one of our headline games, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, was delayed. To get the tournament series on track, we’re going to host a massive GT Season 5 Round 1 event for both games. March 8th is the date for our Halo 3 Team Slayer (4 to a team) event.

March 22nd: The long awaited sequel to Melee will be the main game for March 22nd, as we roll out Super Smash Bros. Brawl! Singles in the morning, with Doubles in the afternoon time permits.

There will be more info on each tournament as it comes up, but I really wanted to get some solid info up on the site so you all would know what’s going on. Keep checking back for more info! Laters
