A Few of My Favorite Things

Okay, so far this year, I have spent a lot of time looking at lists of what many people consider to be the best books of 2011. I’ve looked at the Newbery Awards, the Printz Awards, and the YALSA Awards. I can’t even begin to tell you how many hours I’ve spent looking at different websites like Goodreads, Io9, and NPR. I’ve spent all this time trying to stay current with what other people thought was the best of the year instead of spending that time pondering what I loved.

So, in 2012, I am going to start listing things I find to be interesting, educational, and/or fun. And who knows, in some extreme cases when I can’t think of anything else to say, I may even write what I love about bacon. If that ever happens, though, be prepared, because it will most likely be a very long list.

Without further delay my first list for 2012 is:

My Top Five Favorite Vampire Teen Fiction Titles:

1. City of Bones (Mortal Instruments series) – Cassandra Clare

2. Evernight (Evernight series) – Claudia Gray

3. Clockwork Angle (The Infernal Devices series) – Cassandra Clare

4. Eighth Grade Bites (Chronicles of Vladimir Tod) – Heather Brewer

5. Twilight (Twilight series) – Stephenie Meyer

For the Love of the Shoes

This week I will cover one of my favorite holidays as well as one of my favorite pairs of shoes:  The Savage Beast AF1s.

Nike uses any and every opportunity to release special/limited shoes. For example, in honor of Halloween 2009 they released a pair of Air Force 1′s that were inspired by Gossamer, the reddish orange beast in the Bugs Bunny cartoons.   The shoes are
extremely unique and make quite a visual statement.

The entire shoe (except the soles) is covered in short, orange pony hair.   On the back of the shoe it reads “Savage Beast”  instead of “Nike”.

The laces are in a matching orange color.

I love putting together a costume and these shoes celebrate all that is fun about Halloween.

I have never worn my pair of Savage Beast AF1s, but they do garner a lot of attention
when my friends visit.   A few of my friends even refer to them as
their favorite pair from my collection.

I hope that you enjoy looking at the pictures of them.

Super Powers are Super Cool!

We have a huge event coming up on February 4, 2012, at the St. Joseph County Public Library: Science Alive.

Science Alive is a look at the diverse world of science. The schedule includes everything from a program on colorful chemical reactions to hands-on experiences with things both creepy and crawly.

This cool event got me thinking about different science ideas, and anytime I start to think about things I’m not the most knowledgeable about, I try to relate it to something I understand better. In this case, it made me think, “I really wish super powers were scientifically possible.”

At some point in his or her life, almost everyone has considered what kind of super power would be the best to have and why. Well, maybe not everyone, but I know I spent many hours considering options and weighing the ups and downs of certain powers.

When I was young, for a time I thought I would want to be invisible. Invisibility seemed like it could be fun. I mean, if no one could see me, just think about how many adventures (a nice word for trouble) I could have without getting caught.

But after really thinking about it, I realized invisibility was dangerous. If you knew you would never get caught, it seems like it would be tempting to use your power for evil things, such as skipping ahead in lines, scaring innocent people, and in extreme situations, even getting away with crimes.

So after I decided invisibility was a pathway power to becoming a super villain, I settled on telekinesis.

Okay, so having the power to move things with my mind could be just as dangerous, if not more so, than invisibility, but I think I could handle it—really. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?

Just think about it: Never again would I have to get up to grab the television remote when it’s out of reach. And I could always use my mental power to get things off of really tall shelves.

In the end, I think being able to move things with my mind is going to be key for my future success and happiness. And come February 4th at Science Alive, I’m going to stop every science lover I can find to try to figure out a way to make it happen.

For the Love of the Shoes

Today I am going to branch out from the Air Jordan shoes that I typically talk about.  Today I am going to discuss the Nike Air Force 1.   This shoe was created by Bruce Kilgore in 1982 and was the first to have the Nike Air Technology. Air Force 1s have a very loyal following and Nike obliges them with dozens of variations every year.  But the start for this style was not so smooth.  Introduced in 1982, discontinued in 1983, and finally brought back in 1986 – the Air Force 1 lives on and continues to sell well.   According to Wikipedia there have been over 1,700 color variations of this shoe – I believe it – Nike is not a company to leave well enough alone. I’m sure each addition is directly related to profitability. 2012 is the 30th anniversary of the AF1 and I expect several amazing variations to drop this year.
I own dozens of different Air Force 1′s and love them all.  One of my favorite pairs is the Air Force 1 Premium “Green Bean”.   They are patent leather and quite colorful.  As you can see from the pics – they are not your average looking pair of sneakers.   Orange and yellow and bright green all make for a statement shoe.  They were introduced in 2006 and have not been re-released since.
I have 2 pairs and have yet to wear them.  If it does happen – it will definitely not be until spring.  Winter salt and snow are not a sneakerhead’s friend.

Printz Awards for Young Adult Literature

2012 Winner

Where Things Come Back – John Corey Whaley

Just when seventeen-year-old Cullen Witter thinks he understands everything about his small and painfully dull Arkansas town, it all disappears. . . .

In the summer before Cullen’s senior year, a nominally-depressed birdwatcher named John Barling thinks he spots a species of woodpecker thought to be extinct since the 1940s in Lily, Arkansas. His rediscovery of the so-called Lazarus Woodpecker sparks a flurry of press and woodpecker-mania. Soon all the kids are getting woodpecker haircuts and everyone’s eating “Lazarus burgers.” But as absurd as the town’s carnival atmosphere has become, nothing is more startling than the realization that Cullen’s sensitive, gifted fifteen-year-old brother Gabriel has suddenly and inexplicably disappeared. (Goodreads.com)

2012 Honor Books

Why We Broke Up – Daniel Handler

Min Green and Ed Slaterton are breaking up, so Min is writing Ed a letter and giving him a box. Inside the box is why they broke up. Two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings, a comb from a motel room, and every other item collected over the course of a giddy, intimate, heartbreaking relationship. Item after item is illustrated and accounted for, and then the box, like a girlfriend, will be dumped. (Goodreads.com)

The Returning – Christine Hinwood

Vivid, compassionate and totally absorbing, Bloodflower follows the fortunes of young Cam Attling and all those whose fates entwine with his.

Cam has a hunger, an always-hunger; it drives him from home, to war, from north to south. When he returns from war alone – all his fellow soldiers slain – suspicion swirls around him. He’s damaged in body and soul, yet he rides a fine horse and speaks well of his foes. What has he witnessed? Where does his true allegiance lie? How will life unfold for his little sister, his closest friend, his betrothed, his community, and even the enemy Lord who maimed him? (Goodreads.com)

Jasper Jones – Craig Silvey

Late on a hot summer night in 1965, Charlie Bucktin, a precocious and bookish boy of thirteen, is startled by an urgent knock on the window of his sleep-out. His visitor is Jasper Jones, an outcast in the regional mining town of Corrigan. Rebellious, mixed-race and solitary, Jasper is a distant figure of danger and intrigue for Charlie. So when Jasper begs for his help, Charlie eagerly steals into the night by his side, terribly afraid but desperate to impress. Jasper takes him to his secret glade in the bush, and it’s here that Charlie bears witness to Jasper’s horrible discovery. With his secret like a brick in his belly, Charlie is pushed and pulled by a town closing in on itself in fear and suspicion. (Goodreads.com)

The Scorpio Races – Maggie Stiefvater

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen. (Goodreads.com)

For the Love of the Shoes

This week’s featured shoes are the Nike Doernbecher III’s. Doernbecher is a pediatric hospital in Nike’s home state of Oregon.

Each year since 2004, Nike has selected a few patients at the hospital to design completely custom shoes. The kids can choose any shoe Nike makes, and then personalize it in any way their hearts desire.   Some of the designs are very wild and some are pretty tame by comparison. Every Fall, Nike sells the shoes at select locations as well as online. They then donate 100% of the proceeds to the Doernbecher Pediatric Hospital.  It is a win-win for all parties.   The kids get to design shoes and enjoy the process while Nike gets great PR. Additionally Doernbecher gets money for research and care, and sneakerheads get a chance at some very crazy limited shoes.

My favorite pair was released in the Fall of 2010–The Doernbecher III.  Based on the Air Jordan III – which is my all time favorite Jordan shoe silhouette.  The colors, materials and design are just as unique as the kid who designed them: Cole Johnanson from Portland, Oregon. After he overcame Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, Johanson selected the Air Jordan III to be his canvas for the Doernbecher Freestyle Collection of this year.

The insoles have “Courage//Strength ” printed on them.  If you take a look behind the back tab on each of the shoes, there is a picture of one of Cole’s favorite foods: spaghetti on the left shoe and chocolate on the right.  The pictures really do not do these shoes justice. The colors are all so vibrant and the details are top notch.

They are definitely one of my most valued pairs – I love the shoes and the subtle design hints. But most of all, they were created for a worthy cause.

For the Love of the Shoes

Today’s installment of shoe love is inspired by the Chinese Zodiac signs. As we approach the Chinese New Year, which begins on Jan 23, 2012, we will welcome the Year of the Dragon but, this doesn’t mean we should forget 2011’s year of the Rabbit. Nike – never a company to let anything pass without trying to make some money – commemorates the Chinese New Year (every 365 days) with several shoes and designs that accompany the animal that corresponds with the new year. The pair that I have from this past year is the Year of the Rabbit Air Force 1s. The design has several unique elements incorporated into the shoe. The insole has several rabbits all over it. The trademark Nike Swoosh is orange on the outside of the shoe and blue on the right side of each shoe. They have a combination of white leather and white suede making up the majority of the shoe. The sole is completely white and includes 2 pairs of laces – blue and orange. They are quite an impressive looking pair of shoes to me. I love them and cherish the pair that I have. They were very limited and sold out instantly. I welcome the Year of the Dragon and all the shoes that it will bring.
